Mark Donohue at the Can Am race at Riverside in 1972. The races in America were transferred to the Penske team. The 12-cylinder engine of the 917-10 comes from the 917 coupes used in 1969-1971. Equipped with two turbochargers, the 5 liter engine delivered a good 1000 hp. The tubular space frame of this vehicle was made of magnesium tubing.

Pit stop during practice for the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1968. Gerhard Mitter in the Porsche 908 Coupe, left, with Ferdinand Piech hat. This unique piece was developed by the French company SERA as a hybrid of long-tail and short-tail. The Porsche mechanics nicknamed it “Pig” because of its unusual shape. Its paintwork was accordingly. The drivers Willi Kauhsen / Reinhold Joest held fifth place until an accident shortly before the end of the race.

The heavily drawn winning car of the 24-hour race, driven by Dr. Helmut Marko / Gijs van Lennep, at the last pit stop shortly before the end of the race. In the picture from left to right: Helmuth Bott, racing mechanic Klaus Bischof. Peter Falk and two other mechanics. This 917 was the only one with a frame made of lightweight magnesium tubing. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, the 1971 race was the fastest in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The Porsche 917 were equipped with an extended rear fairing for Le Mans. One of two works cars was the one pictured here, with the start number 14. Behind the Porsche are the drivers Kurt Ahrens and Rolf Stommelen. Right behind the open engine cover, Ferdinand Piech with the mechanics. Because of the persistent loss of oil in the 12-cylinder engine, the end for the German driver pairing came in the 18th hour.
